Panels, committees and electorates that decide on the basis of collectively assigned scores or grades have an epistemic edge over those using majoritarian voting methods. They can for instance under realistic assumptions be counted on to reach right decisions although majorities, on account of the ignorance and prejudices of voters, must be expected to make wrong ones. This finding emerges as a consequence of a jury theorem for collective grading. It is illustrated also using computer simulations of assemblies of different sizes. The grading-jury theorem casts an optimistic light on the possibilities for suitably designed democratic institutions to make well-informed decisions, even in a time of misinformation and polarization.
