We will begin by a group discussion of some examples of scientific research that raise questions about the requirements of consent, respect for privacy, and the prohibition on harming research subjects. This will be followed by an introductory lecture to these requirements and the issues they raise for research.  Finally, we will discuss some ethical issues in research using the internet, social media, and "big data".  We will ask how to make sense of these requirements in this new context.

The home assignment will be published on the day of the seminar and have a deadline one week later.
